Emerson Network Power Brings Direct Cooling
By
Jeff Feinman
August 1, 2008 —
Emerson Network Power has created a new cooling system that can be positioned next to equipment racks to save energy by directly fanning the data center rows.
The Liebert Challenger ITR, released yesterday, can be installed within the row wherever cooling is needed the most, according to the company. It is small enough to fit in computer rooms or network closets.
The product comes in versions that can cool up to 23kW or 33kW, and its horizontal airflow pattern lets the unit be used on raised or non-raised floors. The product is 91 inches high and 43 inches deep, the company said.
This is the latest product coming from Emerson’s Liebert arm, which focuses on data center power, UPS and HVAC products. Liebert is a separate company run under Emerson Network Power’s command.
“Today’s high-speed computing technologies offer significant advantages, but data center managers often fail to anticipate the impact they will have on cooling demand,” said Dave Larson, a product manager at Emerson Network Power. “The Liebert Challenger ITR delivers cooling where it’s needed the most; in the row of dense rack equipment at the source of the heat.”
Other features of the Liebert Challenger ITR include a scroll compressor that compresses the air to allow for precise adjustments in cooling, according to Larson. Emerson Network Power also claimed that the product operates at 85 decibels, the quietest of any row-based cooling system.
