Intel Rolls Out System-on-a-Chip Design
By
Michelle Savage
July 24, 2008 —
Intel today announced a new line of system-on-a-chip (SOC) processors designed for Internet-connected devices and systems.
There are eight new SOC processors under the Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor line. The chips, which are based on Intel’s Pentium M core, run between 600MHz and 1.2GHz, integrate a memory controller, and use about 34 percent less power than traditional Intel embedded processors, said Intel.
Each of the new products includes Intel QuickAssist Technology, which simplifies deployment of security and packet accelerators in Intel-based computers.
Intel’s future SOC chips will be based on the x86 core found in Intel's Atom chip, which is used for mobile Internet devices and mini laptops, said Intel. The SOC series will eventually include 15 products.
The chips will be used primarily for information systems, industrial robots, and security and communications hardware, although Intel believes there are many possible markets for the technology.
"There is a tremendous opportunity for these smart SOC solutions in the market today as the number of Internet-connected devices reaches into the billions, performance expectations rise and device sizes shrink," said Doug Davis, vice president of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group and general manager of Intel's Embedded and Communications Group, in a statement.
